How to Claim Back VAT When Buying from South Africa (Namibia Customer Guide)
If you’re a Namibian customer buying goods from Two Running Hares and arranging your own transport or courier, you may be eligible to claim back the VAT (Value-Added Tax) paid on your purchase. Here’s how:
✅ Step 1: Purchase Goods and Receive a Valid VAT Invoice
- We will issue a VAT invoice that includes:
- Our VAT number
- The total price including VAT
- A clear description of the goods
- This invoice is essential for your VAT refund claim — keep it safe.
✅ Step 2: Arrange Your Own Export
- You must use a registered courier or transporter.
- You or your courier will act as the exporter of record.
- You do NOT need our exporter’s code. The courier handles the export in your name.
✅ Step 3: Ensure Export Documents Are Completed Correctly
- Ask your courier to obtain a SARS-stamped SAD500 or customs export document.
- You’ll also need:
- Your original VAT invoice
- Proof of payment (e.g. EFT, card slip)
- No customs stamp = no VAT refund.
✅ Step 4: Export the Goods Within 90 Days
- The goods must be exported within 90 days from the invoice date.
- Keep proof of the date the goods crossed the border.
✅ Step 5: Claim Your VAT Refund
- Apply through Tax Refunds for Tourists (TRT):
- Submit:
- Your original VAT invoice
- Proof of payment
- Stamped export/customs documents
- Your passport details
- Claims must be submitted within 3 months of export.
